Kent McLaughlin Scholarship for Working Potters To continue Kent’s legacy in clay, Schaller Gallery will be donating the proceeds of this Giving Tuesday Show to the Penland School of Craft Scholarship Fund in Kent’s name. Upon Kent’s passing in 2021, Suze and the Penland School of Crafts established the Kent McLaughlin Scholarship for Working Potters, which will be the benefactor of this year’s Giving Tuesday Show. In 1996, Kent and Suze opened the doors to their studio Fork Mountain Pottery, which has been a staple of the Penland and Bakersville area ever since. As the service coordinator and facilities manager at Penland School of Crafts and from being a workshop instructor numerous times, Kent had a vast impact on the clay community. For those that knew Kent, his warm, caring, and humble demeanor made him a friend to all. Suze’s husband, Kent McLaughlin, succumbed to pancreatic cancer in 2021. This year, we have asked Suze Lindsay to co-curate a show with us. To show our appreciation for the continued support of Schaller Gallery, each year we select a maker to have a show opening in coordination with Giving Tuesday. After the turkey has been carved up, the family gatherings have ended, and we’ve all changed into a pair of comfortable sweatpants, the Schaller Gallery crew takes time to take stock of the year and give thanks.
